Quick answer: You can get unemployment benefit in Portugal (subsídio de desemprego) if you lost your job involuntarily, have at least 360 days of contributions in the last 24 months and register at the job centre. You receive 65% of your reference pay, between 537,13 € and 1 342,83 € per month in 2026, for 150 to 540 days depending on your age and work history. You apply at IEFP within 90 days of becoming unemployed.

Unemployment benefit in Portugal (subsídio de desemprego) is a Social Security (Segurança Social) payment that replaces part of the salary of people who lost their job against their will. Everything in this guide comes from the Social Security Practical Guide published on 29 July 2026.

Who qualifies for unemployment benefit in Portugal?

You must meet all of these conditions:

  1. Live in Portugal.
  2. Be involuntarily unemployed (dismissal, end of a fixed-term contract, termination by mutual agreement under certain conditions).
  3. Be able and available to work.
  4. Be registered at the job centre (centro de emprego, run by IEFP — the public employment service) for the area where you live.
  5. Have had an employment contract.
  6. Meet the qualifying period (prazo de garantia): at least 360 days of registered salaries in the 24 months before becoming unemployed.
  7. Apply within 90 consecutive days of becoming unemployed.
  8. If you are a foreigner, have a valid residence permit that allows you to work.

Days that count towards the qualifying period include, among others, days worked under a contract, periods as a self-employed worker whose contribution rate included unemployment protection, unused paid holidays, and up to 120 days of sick leave. Days when you were already receiving unemployment benefits do not count.

If you do not reach 360 days, you may be entitled to the subsídio social de desemprego (social unemployment benefit), which has different rules.

How much is unemployment benefit in Portugal in 2026?

The daily amount is 65% of your reference pay (remuneração de referência, RR). The RR is the total of your salaries in the first 12 of the last 14 months before unemployment (including holiday and Christmas allowances), divided by 360.

Limit (2026) Monthly amount
Minimum 537,13 € (1 × IAS), unless your net RR is lower
Minimum if your salaries were ≥ minimum wage (920 €) 617,70 € (1,15 × IAS)
Absolute maximum 1 342,83 € (2,5 × IAS)
Relative maximum 75% of net RR (RR − 11% Social Security − IRS withholding)

The IAS (Indexante dos Apoios Sociais) is the social support index used to calculate benefits.

Example from the official guide: salary of 1 000 € × 14 = 14 000 € in 12 months. Daily RR = 14 000 € ÷ 360 = 38,89 €. Monthly benefit = 38,89 € × 30 × 65% ≈ 758,36 €, within the limits.

10% increase: when both members of a couple are unemployed and have dependent children, or when the person receiving it is the only one responsible for dependent children.

How long do you receive it?

It depends on your age and how long you paid contributions since your last period of unemployment:

Age Up to 15 months of contributions 15 to 24 months 24 months or more Extra for every 5 years of contributions (last 20)
Up to 30 150 days 210 days 330 days 30 days
30 to 39 180 days 330 days 420 days 30 days
40 to 49 210 days 360 days 540 days 45 days
50 or over 270 days 480 days 540 days 60 days

The benefit counts from the date you apply.

How to apply for unemployment benefit

  1. Ask your employer for the Declaração de Situação de Desemprego (unemployment status declaration, form RP 5044). If your employer submits it digitally on Segurança Social Direta when registering the end of your contract, you do not need to hand it in.
  2. Register with IEFP — at the job centre or on the IEFP portal.
  3. When you register, the application for unemployment benefits (form RP 5000) is filled in.
  4. Bring your identity document and proof of an IBAN in your name.
  5. If your employer refuses to give you the declaration, ask the ACT (Autoridade para as Condições de Trabalho, the labour inspection authority) for it.
  6. Do all of this within 90 consecutive days of your last day of work.

You need your NISS (Social Security number) and it is a good idea to have access to Segurança Social Direta to follow your case and register your IBAN.

Example from the official guide: if your 1st day without work was 1 March, the deadline ends on 29 May. Applying on 30 June means losing 1 month of benefit.

What are my duties while receiving it?

The benefit can be suspended, for example, if you accept a temporary contract, and started again afterwards.

Frequently asked questions

How many months do I need to work to get unemployment benefit in Portugal?

At least 12 months (360 days) with registered salaries in the 24 months before you became unemployed. If you do not meet this, you may be entitled to the subsídio social de desemprego (social unemployment benefit).

How much unemployment benefit will I get?

65% of your reference pay. In 2026, the monthly amount cannot be less than 537,13 € (1 IAS) or more than 1 342,83 € (2,5 IAS), and cannot be more than 75% of your net reference pay.

If I quit my job, can I get unemployment benefit?

As a rule, no, because unemployment must be involuntary. There are exceptions, such as when the worker ends the contract with just cause, or resigns because of domestic violence with victim status.

What is the deadline to apply for unemployment benefit?

90 consecutive days from the day you became unemployed. If you apply later, the delay is taken off the total time you receive the benefit.

Can I travel or go on holiday while receiving unemployment benefit?

You can leave the country during the yearly exemption period (for example, one month of holiday), if you tell the job centre in advance. Otherwise, the benefit is suspended.
